Destin is becoming increasingly popular with guests who do not want to leave the U.S during these uncertain times. The white sand beaches and beautiful clear emerald water rival those you will find in other popular destinations but require a whole lot less fuss to get here. One should note however, the vibe in Destin is very family-friendly and may not be the best destination spot for a wild beach party if that’s what you are looking for. There are other beaches in Florida that are better suited for the party scene.
Getting to Destin by air can be expensive or a bit of a challenge. No matter which form of transportation you use to get here, you WILL need a car if you want to make the most out of your trip. There are very few enclaves where you can be on the beach and have every accessible restaurant and main attraction within walking distance. Be sure to read our travel guide for more detailed information.
There are three airports you can use to reach Destin.
Destin – Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS) is the preferred airport for Florida’s Gulf Coast and is an excellent option if you want to make every second count.
Please allow extra time to go through TSA during the summer months. This is a small airport and you don’t want to miss your flight.
- American Airlines
- Southwest (beginning May 1st, 2021)
The Pensacola airport is about 50 miles west of Destin and will take roughly an hour to reach Destin with your rental car.
- Silver Airways
As a side note, the summer months are very busy in this area. Even though you may reserve a rental car, it doesn’t mean there will be one available for you when you arrive unless you prepay.
