Well, there is one thing for certain. None of us could have predicted how we would spend 2020. It brought a lot of surprises, life changes, and plenty of uncertainty. Although how and where we work was altered for a lot of us, our need for relaxation and rejuvenation did not cease. For many of us, it increased.
If you are a selective traveler and with specific desires of where you stay and activities that you enjoy, you typically want to start planning your vacation roughly six months in advance or more. However, since we have all been rather cooped up, 2021 may be a busier year than normal. It’s never too early to start. That being said, there are a few things to keep in mind.
First, and foremost, be sure and purchase travel insurance. It may seem like a waste of money, but there are so many variables to consider when booking a beach vacation. No matter whether it’s the weather, health issues, or some other reason, you want to be able to cancel your trip if necessary, without losing a lot of money. Even with insurance, we strongly suggest you completely understand the cancellation policy for a rental BEFORE you book. See it or get it in writing.
If you are traveling in the busy season, you are going to experience an increase in cost. It goes without saying that if a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Work with reputable companies even if there are additional fees. A wise saying is, “you never get more than what you pay for.” That holds true here as well. Check the Better Business Bureau for ratings. Cross-reference with other sources such as our Facebook group, Yelp, and Google reviews. You don’t want to be taken advantage of when it may be a preventable situation. We have an article with more information on how to avoid being scammed. Read more…
If this is your first trip to Destin, there are many things to consider before you book. There are a few hotels on the beach but most are vacation rentals. There are a few public beaches with ample parking but many are private and for use by the adjacent vacation rental occupants and/or renters. Read our First-time visitor’s Travel Guide to learn more.
Most of you will be driving to Destin. Keep in mind, most vacation rentals provide one, possibly two parking spaces. Anything more, and you will need to find additional parking. That may cost you quite a bit.
There is absolutely one essential item that you must bring with you. Patience. The busy season is from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Just like you, many people want to escape a bit of life’s anxiety and head to the beach. Hwy 98 is the main road through town. It gets very congested and most drivers are experiencing it for the first time. Always, always, always allow more time to arrive than what your GPS is telling. Why spoil a good vacation because you arrived late for dinner or an attraction that sailed without you?
One last thing, pack light. You will be spending most of your time at the beach. Remember, beach hair, don’t care! 😊 Read our blog post on what to bring.
